Deck Material Calculator
Estimate deck boards, total board length, joist quantity, waste-adjusted materials, and optional board cost.
What this calculator does
Enter deck dimensions, actual board size, gaps, stock length, joist spacing, and waste. The calculator counts whole board rows and stock pieces before estimating material and cost.
Deck and board details
Boards run along the deck length. Stock-board counts are conservative because leftover pieces are not assumed reusable.
Rows are counted across the width using board width plus gap; each row is divided into whole stock-board lengths.
The arithmetic uses the exact values shown above. Verify field measurements, product pack sizes, layout constraints, and local requirements before ordering or building.
How to interpret the result
The board count is a purchasing estimate for a straight parallel layout. Picture frames, diagonal boards, stairs, blocking, beams, fasteners, and structural span design require separate planning.
How the result is calculated
Board rows = (deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap). Boards = rows × pieces per row. Waste quantity = boards × (1 + waste %).
Worked example
A 20 × 12 ft deck using 5.5 inch boards, 12 ft stock lengths, ¼ inch gaps, and 10% waste needs approximately 59 boards.
How to use this calculator
- Measure the finished deck length and width.
- Use actual board width rather than nominal lumber size.
- Enter the gap and stock length available from the supplier.
- Set joist spacing from an approved design, not from this material estimate.
- Increase waste for patterns or complicated cuts.
Supported units
Feet and inches in imperial mode; meters and millimeters in metric mode.
Practical guidance
- Use actual board dimensions, not nominal sizes.
- Increase waste for diagonal or patterned layouts.
- Verify stock lengths before ordering.
Assumptions and limitations
This estimate assumes straight, parallel boards with simple butt joints. Patterned layouts, picture frames, stairs, blocking, beams, fasteners, and local span rules need separate planning.
Methodology
Rows are counted across deck width using actual face width plus gap. Pieces per row are based on stock length. Whole quantities are rounded up before waste.

Frequently asked questions
Does the board count include waste?
Yes. The headline quantity includes the waste percentage you enter.
Are joists a structural design?
No. Joist count is a spacing estimate only; sizing and spans require code-compliant design.
How is price calculated?
Optional cost is the waste-adjusted board quantity multiplied by your price per board.
